Brief Release: Losing the Canada Disability Benefit means losing hope for many Albertans
“[An extra $200 per month means] I could actually live instead of just surviving.” - AISH recipient residing in Edmonton
The Government of Alberta is the only province in Canada to treat the newly launched Canada Disability Benefit (CDP) as non-exempt income for Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) recipients, precluding these individuals from receiving an extra $200 per month in financial support. In response to this decision, a collaborative of Alberta-based non-profit organizations and advocates (including DiPo researchers) developed a policy brief which captures the real life consequences of this policy decision by spotlighting stories of AISH recipients across Alberta. Based on what we heard, we urge the Government of Alberta to reverse this decision and allow these Albertans to receive the additional financial support they need.
